The Catholic Press
In 1905 the Holy Father St. Pius X wrote to the Bishops of Mexico: "As regards to newspapers and magazines, I wish to convince all sober-minded people that every effort must be made for Catholics to keep only truly Catholic writings and newspapers. It is, in my opinion, the most important matter nowadays".
He expressed it in even stronger terms in 1908 in his speech to the clergy: "Neither the people nor the clergy understand the importance of the press. They say: “there was no press before”, not realizing that times have changed. It is good to build churches, to preach sermons, to establish missions and schools, but these efforts will be futile if we neglect the most important weapon of today, namely the press”. The Cardinal of Pisa adds "You preach sermons on Sundays, and newspapers preach every day, every hour. You talk to the faithful in the church, and a newspaper follows them into their houses. You talk half an hour or an hour, and a newspaper never stops talking".
